Asian Joint Ventures/Subsidiaries
Vale has a majority equity interest in two nickel refining operations in North Asia,
and a minority interest in two others.
The majority joint ventures are Vale Japan Limited located in Matsuzaka, Japan and
Vale New Nickel Materials (Dalian) Co., Ltd. located in Dalian, a coastal city of
over five million people in Liaoning Province in northeastern China.
The minority joint ventures are Taiwan Nickel Refining Corporation in Kaohsiung,
Taiwan, and Korea Nickel Corporation in Onsan, Republic of South Korea.
These operations produce nickel for the local stainless steel markets in Japan,
China, Taiwan and South Korea, as well as some export production.
Although our Asian joint venture operations are too small to contribute significantly
to local community development initiatives, they all play important roles as respected
employers in their local communities. Each of our operations is committed to responsible
corporate citizenship and environmental stewardship. For instance, both of our majority
owned joint venture companies have employment and environment, health and safety
standards that follow our corporate guidelines and reflect local cultural standards
and practices. And, they have consistently achieved world-class safety performances.
