Additional Environmental and Consumer Health Information on Nickel

The following provides additional information relevant to employees who may be required to dispose of scrap, spilled material, turnings, grindings or dusts of Vale's nickel products. Users are encouraged to note this information and share it with their customers and with manufacturers of downstream products that use or contain nickel.

Consumer product safety: Nickel is a known sensitizer. For consumer products, nickel should not be used in a way that could expose users of consumer products to elevated levels of nickel ions when normal use puts those products into intimate and prolonged contact with the skin. Alloys containing nickel, on the other hand, will almost always be acceptable for skin contact but there are exceptions. Life cycle: A life cycle assessment, life cycle impact assessment and life cycle inventory data for generic Class I nickel (99.7% Ni), nickel oxide and ferro-nickel (base year: 1999) is available at www.nickelinstitute.org/index.cfm/ci_id/114.htm

End-of-Life: Nickel is used in a myriad of materials and products. At the end-of-life of those materials and products, there will be environmental and residual economic values that should be recovered. If at all possible they should not be discarded; they should be recycled. For advice or further information, please contact your regional sales office.

Resource Depletion: Nickel comes from a finite resource base. It should be used efficiently and, if at all possible, not discarded at any stage of its product life cycle. For advice or further information, please contact your regional sales office.

Sustainability: Nickel's qualities include recyclability, toughness, high temperature strength. It will have residual economic value at the end-of-life of the products that contain it.
